Game Day Snacks

by angelika on January 23, 2011

It’s getting close to game day! We are huge football fans, and our team is in the playoffs tomorrow. We are hosting some family and friends to celebrate the big game, and I decided to try some new finger foods this year. My husband is a chips and onion dip fanatic. The grosser the better, in his mind. Usually we are a Whole Foods or Co-op shopping kind of family, but on game days he has often come home with dips full of ingredients I can’t even pronounce. This year I am trying to remake some of his favorites, with a little more wholesome ingredient list. My first challenge was onion dip. I found this recipe in Martha Stewart’s archives, and I barely tweaked it. It is delicious, hits all the same notes as the store bought one, but with a depth and brightness you can never get from the store bought dips. We love it, and I think your friends and family will too.

Homemade Onion Dip
2 TBS olive oil
2 sweet onions, minced
salt and pepper
1 cup sour cream
2 oz cream cheese
1 1/2 tsp white wine vinegar
1/4 cups finely chopped chives
Mince your onions very finely. I used Sweetie Sweet onions, you can use whatever you find near you. Heat your olive oil in a large skillet.
Saute the onions until they lightly brown, seasoning with coarse grind salt and pepper. Stir often. Remove the onions from the heat and let them cool completely.

In a medium sized bowl combine the sour cream, cream cheese, vinegar and chives. Add the onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Refrigerate for at least an hour to thicken. You can make this ahead and store it covered in the fridge for two days.
Serve with chips or crudité!
A votre santé!

Last night I felt like snacking and found potato chips but no dip (I'm not normally a snacker). Anyway, I remembered you had posted this on your blog, and I have to tell you that this stuff is SO AWESOME! We added a bit of cayenne while cooking the onions because we like that heat. I swear, I will never make a dip with nasty french onion soup mix again. This was so easy!

I love it too! I know what you mean about never going back to the packaged stuff. If I had known it was this easy I'd have been making dip this way for years!
